We at Jerry Pate Design are proud to be leading the restoration of Pete Dye’s favorite course design. And we’re excited to see news of the restoration featured in Golfweek!
To say Jerry Pate has a lot of history with the Teeth of the Dog golf course at the Casa de Campo Resort would be an understatement. His first experience came in 1974 as he led the four-man United States team to win the Eisenhower Trophy. This was when the course played host to the World Amateur Team Championship. From there, Pate went on to become lifelong friends with the renowned Pete Dye, designer of Teeth of the Dog.
A New Era
It seems fitting that now Pate and our team here at Jerry Pate Design will lead the restoration of the course. The project will begin January 2025 and continue until the following November. The renovation will be largely cosmetic, with the goal of maintaining and preserving as much of Dye’s vision as possible. Tees and fairways will be re-grassed with Dynasty Paspalum. Fairways will be sand-capped to restore the ideal firm and bouncy turf. Greens will be brought back to their original sizes, bunkers reshaped and cart paths renovated. Demolition and reconstruction of the golf shop and Lago Grill are also part of the plan.
Notably, there will be only a couple of minor changes in length. This is the way Pate, as the project’s architectural consultant, thinks it should be. As he puts it, “I have long admired Pete Dye, as he was a creative genius who transformed the modern game of golf with his immense talent and imagination, and no course typifies that more than Teeth of the Dog. The layout is truly one of the best in the world, and our job is to preserve Pete’s lifeworks and put a bit more bite back into Teeth of the Dog.”
