Navy Federal Credit Union

The Sustainable Respite

When Navy Federal Credit Union aimed to enhance the outdoor amenities of their suburban campus, the Jerry Pate Design team recognized that the endeavor posed welcome challenges. Addressing issues related to maintenance, stormwater management, and spatial limitations, the team grappled with pivotal questions: How could they effectively maintain an expanded campus landscape? Was it possible to create an amenity out of the code-required stormwater ponds for employee enjoyment, seamlessly blending with the environment? Could they enhance the aesthetics and safety of parking lot walkways without sacrificing valuable parking spaces? Naturally, JPD overcame these challenges to provide aesthetically pleasing, functional and maintainable campus exterior spaces.

The team began its relationship with Navy Federal through an initial parking lot expansion. Once the scope of the project expanded, they were ready to dive into Navy Federal’s new program. First, JPD advised hiring an in-house maintenance manager. Next, they formed focus groups with employees and stakeholders. These included gatherings of end users with their own desires for the landscape, like a running group that envisioned safe paths for training. Soon, JPD initiated discussions with engineers and local water management to design tranquil ponds that would account for stormwater. Last, but certainly not least, the parking lot was given new life, with covered walkways to protect from rain. A great new way for Navy Federal’s employees to start each day.
