The Historic Restoration
Since its opening in 1971, Pete Dye’s Teeth of the Dog course at Casa de Campo in the Caribbean has often been called the best course in the region. It was such a passion project for the famous golf course designer that he and his wife, Alice, purchased a winter home along its bright-green rolling hills so that Dye could continue to edit his design for nearly half a century. At the 1974 World Amateur Team Championship, our very own Jerry Pate was the lowest scorer as he contributed to the USA’s win on that very course. Given his friendship and longtime collaboration with Dye, as well as this personal connection to the course, it only makes sense that our President and his firm would be the ones to take on the much-needed restoration. And we will.
In 2025, Pate and our Senior Designer/Vice President, Steve Dana, will work to improve the quality of the course conditions and potentially lengthen some of the holes. While their approach will be to honor Dye’s original design, they’ll be executing repairs and making subtle changes to better the experience of the course. An innovative saltwater-tolerant paspalum will prove one of the most impactful changes, solving the grass-growing problems the oceanside course has faced for decades with new technology. Explore Teeth of the Dog’s beauty in this gallery, and stay tuned for fresh photos and stories as Jerry Pate Design dives into this legacy restoration project.
