Benefits of Landscape Architecture with Trees: Why We Should Restore Canopies After Hurricanes

November 5, 2021 4:34 pm Published by

In 2021, we have experienced the third most active hurricane season on record. As so many places have been impacted by these intense storms in the past year, the conversation surrounding the importance of tree canopies has resurfaced. (Although, it’s always one we here at Jerry Pate Design enjoy talking about!) Today, we’re going to share a few benefits of landscape architecture with trees to show why we should restore canopies after hurricanes.  Benefits Of Trees: They Protect the Planet We all hear a lot of talk about climate change floating around, but it can be difficult to get a clear answer on what really causes it. But here’s one insight Climate.gov has shared: “Increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide are responsible for about two-thirds of the total energy imbalance that is causing Earth’s temperature to rise.”  That means that if we can work toward reducing carbon dioxide, we can begin to restore and protect our environment. Given our understanding of this aspect of the problem and its seemingly large impact, carbon dioxide is a great place to start in the fight against climate change. And trees can help us!  While reducing our man-made emissions is a noble goal that we […]

Project Update: Brownsville Park Charrette

November 2, 2021 8:04 pm Published by

On October 25, our team here at Jerry Pate Design collaborated with Sustainable Town Concepts to host a charrette with members of the Pensacola community. The topic of discussion was the forthcoming Brownsville Park project, for which we are in the design phase now.  When we are creating public outdoor spaces for locals to enjoy, it is so important for us to gain their perspectives. We were delighted by the chance to hear feedback and opinions from the very people who will be patrons of Brownsville Park in the future.   As a part of the Pensacola Design Project, Jerry Pate Design is donating our time and effort to make these Brownsville Park improvements. Upon completion, the L-shaped property may feature a playground, pavilion, picnic areas, and more.   We’re excited to break ground soon!   Photography Courtesy of Escambia County Community and Media Relations.

How to Create Healthy Low-Maintenance Landscapes: 5 Tips from the Pros

October 12, 2021 8:52 pm Published by

We all appreciate the beauty and ambience of healthy landscapes, but how often do you think about what goes into them? Sure, we might marvel at the wonders of nature. Many of us probably even think about the talent and passion a landscape architecture firm poured into its design. But we so rarely consider the maintenance (maybe because we don’t want to be reminded of our own lawn-mowing duties). And you’re probably sighing internally, because few people truly find joy in maintenance. But here’s the thing: If you do your due diligence up front, you can minimize the amount of upkeep your landscape needs. Interested? Then keep reading! We’re talking about how to create healthy low-maintenance landscapes, and we’ve got five tips from the pros!  Landscaping Tip #1: You Have to Commit This is perhaps the most important thing to know about maintaining healthy landscapes! After you’ve hired your landscape architect and brought a gorgeous vision to life, you need to be prepared to invest the time and/or money it will take to keep it looking like it did the first day.  If you have a property manager who could handle caring for the landscape after it has been designed and […]

The Health Benefits of Green Spaces (Hint: There are Many!)

September 13, 2021 5:05 am Published by

Most of us know that spending time in nature can provide a sense of peace and groundedness. But when you delve into the research, it’s easy to see that access to it can in fact be a major boon to physical, emotional, and mental well-being alike. This is especially true in urban and suburban settings. Because there, the environment can sometimes be overwhelmingly developed.  A study conducted by Denmark’s University of Aarhus that ran from 1985 to 2013 found that in the context of childhood, “Exposure to green space is comparable to family history and parental age when predicting mental health outcomes. Only socioeconomic status was a slightly stronger indicator.” And of course, that ties together with physical and emotional health outcomes.  It’s clear, when opportunities to commune with nature are intentionally provided, the people who live and work in those areas thrive. Let’s talk about why! Here are a few of the health benefits of green spaces …  #1 Green Spaces Benefit Moods and Attitudes According to an article published by the National Recreation and Park Association, “investigators have found evidence of lower frustration and increased brain activity, resembling meditation, when moving in green space versus being in retail […]

3 Environmental Benefits of Green Spaces (#3 Majorly Battles Climate Change)

Last month we talked about the social benefits of green spaces. This month, we’re back for another installment in the series: The Environmental Benefits of Green Spaces! It might seem obvious that Mother Nature likes green spaces, but just how do they make a tangible difference in supporting our natural environment? Let’s explore that!  #1 Green Spaces Reduce Flooding  While it might seem like rainwater should hit the ground and be worked back into the ecosystem, this isn’t always a good thing in our modern world. When rainwater flows off of streets, it takes nitrates, petroleum products, and debris with it. This can then end up in bays, estuaries, and other bodies of water where it shouldn’t be.  But have no fear, green spaces are here! Because they encourage the planting of more trees, green spaces play a key role in reducing the volume of pollutants that make their way into our bodies of water. You see, trees capture that water before it hits the ground.  And of course, this is a win-win for all! The trees are absorbing fresh water that hasn’t collected any pollutants yet, and they’re helping out their nearby watery areas, too.  #2 Advantages Of Green […]
