Golfweek Features Jerry Pate Design and Teeth of the Dog - Read More
At Jerry Pate Design, we are honored to see one of our projects recognized on one of the game’s most prestigious lists. Golf Digest recently unveiled its 75 Greatest Public Courses list, and The Lodge at Old Waverly/Mossy Oak earned a place among the very best, coming in at #59.
A Legacy of Vision and Design
The story of Mossy Oak is deeply rooted in the passion and vision of George Bryan. In the mid-1980s, Bryan, who ran Bryan Foods, commissioned Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Mississippi—a Bob Cupp/Jerry Pate design that went on to host the U.S. Women’s Open and garner acclaim as a classic test of golf.
Decades later, Bryan expanded his dream across the road, transforming Knob Hill Dairy into what would become Mossy Oak. Partnering with designer Gil Hanse, he envisioned an “Old School” golf experience that would stand as a modern classic. Named after Mossy Oak, the renowned outdoor camouflage brand founded in West Point, the course embraces both its natural landscape and its community roots.
Recognition From Golf Digest
In his write-up, Ron Whitten, Golf Digest Architecture Editor Emeritus, called Old Waverly “a bit underrated” and described Mossy Oak as a unique complement to it. While Old Waverly is expansive and storied, Mossy Oak’s smaller footprint and pure golf-focused design deliver a different kind of magic. With no residential development other than a few cottages along the 10th hole, players experience the course in its purest, most unencumbered form.
A Testament to Collaboration
For Jerry Pate Design, the recognition of The Lodge at Old Waverly/Mossy Oak is more than just a ranking. It reflects decades of collaboration, creativity, and a commitment to golf course design that respects the land and elevates the game. For more than 40 years, Jerry Pate has been a design resource for updates to this Gil Hanse-created course. Currently, we are working on the latest renovation. It’s an honor, as always!
From Old Waverly’s timeless layout to Mossy Oak’s bold and authentic character, West Point, Mississippi has become a destination that speaks to golf lovers everywhere.
We extend our congratulations to everyone who played a role in bringing these remarkable courses to life and are thrilled to celebrate this honor from Golf Digest.
